Surfshark Review 2024: Cheap Price but Is It Any Good?

Surfshark Overview

Since you can subscribe to Surfshark at very low prices, I was skeptical of its quality and decided to put it to the test. I evaluated Surfshark in every critical area including speed, network size, security features, compatibility, and more. It was even tested for China and with multiple streaming services.

Surfshark stands out as an exceptional VPN, offering advanced security settings that many others lack. Features such as IP Rotation, Dynamic MultiHop connections, and CleanWeb not only provided me with a strong sense of security but were also user-friendly. Nevertheless, I occasionally encountered difficulties when trying to connect to streaming platforms immediately. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Surfshark does not function reliably in China.

Still, I highly recommend Surfshark’s 2-year + 2 months plan because it’s one of the best VPNs I’ve ever tested for just $2.29 a month. Surfshark also offers a 7-day free trial on Android, macOS, and iOS devices, and a 30-day money-back guarantee if you need more time. You can try Surfshark risk-free since it’s easy to get a refund if you don’t like it.

Don’t Have Time? Here’s a 1-Minute Summary

Try Surfshark today

Surfshark Unblocks 28+ Streaming Platforms

Surfshark works with all major streaming services. Besides accessing Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu, Surfshark unblocked 25 other platforms during tests including:

Disney+ Max NBC Sports Yle Abema TV
BBC iPlayer ITVx All 4 Sky Go UKTV
Apple TV ESPN+ Paramount+ Peacock TV Kodi
Youtube TV fuboTV Crunchyroll Vudu Discovery+
France TV DAZN Sling TV RTÉ Player Rai Play

Unfortunately, not every server successfully connected on the first attempt. It often took at least 2 tries with different servers before establishing a working connection. If you don’t want to go through the hassle, CyberGhost has a streaming-optimized network for major services. Since they’re tested regularly by its team, the servers always work.

Netflix: Unblocked

Surfshark is one of the top VPNs to access Netflix US and at least 10 other libraries around the world. When tested, it unblocked the platform in these countries:

UK Canada Australia Japan France
Germany India Italy Mexico The Netherlands

Surfshark servers in the US didn’t have trouble loading Money Heist on Netflix

The average connection speed with Surfshark was fast enough to stream shows in UHD without lag or buffering — even over distant servers.

Amazon Prime Video: Unblocked

Surfshark could access Amazon Prime Video across most locations, including the US and UK. Some of the server locations that worked with the platform are Boston, Charlotte, and New York in the US and London and Manchester in the UK. Unlike Netflix, it didn’t take several tries to access Amazon Prime Video with Surfshark.

Surfshark worked with Amazon Prime Video and didn’t lag throughout the movie Paws of Fury

Hulu: Unblocked

Surfshark easily connected to Hulu on over 10 US servers, with the fastest being those in Boston, Detroit, and Manassas. It only took a few seconds to load the movie Mission: Impossible – Fallout watch the entire film in UHD with zero buffering.

Disney+: Unblocked

Surfshark had no problems unblocking Disney+ in the US, Netherlands, and India. Unfortunately, it couldn’t access Disney+ in any other country and was redirected to the US site. Episodes of Secret Invasion loaded in just a few seconds and played in UHD without buffering.

Max: Unblocked

Surfshark also made it possible to access Max (formerly HBO Max) on every US server. The videos loaded quickly and there were no connection errors throughout several episodes of Game of Thrones. The servers in Boston, Dallas, Manassas, Miami, New York, and Tampa had the best streaming quality.

Every Surfshark server in the US could easily access Max

Kodi, 10 play, DAZN: Unblocked

Surfshark’s servers in the US also allowed Kodi add-ons like Popcornflix, Crackle, and Tubi to be downloaded and streamed. The servers in New York, Toronto, and Vancouver were especially impressive as it never took more than 3 seconds to load a video.

It was the same with DAZN and 10 play (which has strong geo-blocks that some VPNs couldn’t unblock). Although those in Perth didn’t work, the servers in Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney unblocked 10 play and played Australian shows easily.

Speed

- 9.0 / 10

Fast Speeds Across the Network

I ran several speed tests on Surfshark’s servers in Berlin, London, New York, and Perth from the Netherlands on my Windows laptop, with a baseline speed of 197.26 Mbps. My Ookla SpeedTest results showed that Surfshark doesn’t drop your speeds too much.

Speed Test Results

Although Surfshark isn’t the fastest VPN on the market, every server I tested could support high-bandwidth activities like streaming and torrenting large files. Even its distant servers were faster than many other VPNs I’ve tested and stayed well beyond the minimum of 25Mbps required for UHD streaming.

I first selected the ‘Fastest server’ and ‘Nearest country’ options, both of which connected me to a Surfshark server in Germany. The speed difference was just 9% so I could torrent, game, and watch UHD videos without experiencing any lag.

Screenshot of speed test results with Surfshark connected to servers in the UK, US, Germany, and Australia

I ran multiple speed tests in different server locations, including the US, UK, Germany, and Australia

I found Surfshark’s Australia server to be the slowest but this was understandable since it’s far from the Netherlands and my data had to travel further. However, the speed drop is almost negligible on nearby servers in Germany and the UK. I also had the best speeds when I used the WireGuard protocol.

However, you shouldn’t expect fast connections with Surfshark’s Dynamic MultiHop servers as they decreased my speeds by almost 50%. This was not surprising since my traffic was routed to 2 different servers and encrypted twice for maximum security.

Is Surfshark Fast Enough for Gaming? Yes, in Nearby Locations

To test Surfshark’s suitability for gaming, I connected to a London server, launched Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam, and ran a speed test. My ping was 22ms, which is very good for a server 300 miles from my location. These low ping rates helped me keep up with my teammates during the game. I didn’t even have to lower the game resolution to improve speeds.

Screenshot of video game "Left 4 Dead 2" with Surfshark connected to a US server location

I was impressed by Surfshark’s fast speeds on nearby servers when I played Left 4 Dead 2

Generally, ping under 150ms is acceptable, but I wasn’t so lucky with Surfshark’s distant servers in Australia. With ping nearing almost 300ms, it was impossible to keep up with my teammates. If you want a VPN with consistent speeds and ping in every location, ExpressVPN is one of the best VPNs for Call of Duty and other fast-paced games.

Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds

Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.

Servers

- 10.0 / 10

Server Network — Global Network of 3,200+ Servers in 100+ Countries

With Surfshark’s large server network of over 3,200 servers in 100 countries, you’ll always be able to find a server nearby. It’s not the biggest network I’ve seen, but it’s not too small that you’ll frequently run into crowded servers either.

In some countries like India, Egypt, Mexico, and more, Surfshark offers virtual servers to make it possible to safely connect to these locations and get better speeds.

There are also free static servers available in the US, UK, Netherlands, Japan, Singapore, and Germany allowing you to use the same IP address every time. Though it helps access IP-sensitive sites without extra verification, static IPs are shared by other users and can be flagged as being associated with a VPN.

Alternatively, you can try Surfshark’s dedicated IP addresses for a small fee. These are exclusive IP addresses only you can use. These are helpful in avoiding blacklisting since there are no other previous (suspicious) activities by another user.

Torrenting — P2P Allowed on Selected Servers

Surfshark doesn’t impose data or bandwidth limits when downloading files and it’s compatible with popular torrenting clients like qBittorrent and uTorrent.

The Surfshark website states that you’ll be automatically connected to a P2P server in a torrent-friendly country once you launch a BitTorrent client. But when I connected to a regular server in Turkey and started torrenting on qBittorrent, I was still on the same server.

Since I’d already begun torrenting and was concerned about my privacy, I contacted customer support over 24/7 live chat. The agent asked me to run tests on IPLeak.net and I saw my IP address was still in Turkey but the DNS server had changed to the Netherlands. According to the agent, I’d already been rerouted to a P2P server as the DNS address had changed.

Screenshot of leak test results with Surfshark connected to a server in Turkey and DNS server in the Netherlands

Surfshark automatically changed my DNS address when I launched a BitTorrent client

To avoid going through this, connect to a P2P server from the Location tab. Just type ‘P2P’ in the search bar, and you’ll see the list change to include 33 countries where torrenting is allowed, including the US and UK. The fastest servers will have a near-empty circle icon.

Screenshot of Surfshark's P2P servers on the Mac app

It’s not mentioned on the Surfshark website but you can manually connect to a P2P server

Does Surfshark Work in China? No

Despite the NoBorders mode that it claims to work in restrictive regions, Surfshark didn’t work in China. During testing, my colleagues could only connect to 1 server in Ireland, but it failed after 30 seconds. Even after troubleshooting, my colleagues couldn’t use Surfshark. A customer support agent recommended using the Shadowsocks protocol but that didn’t work either.

If this is crucial for you, I recommend ExpressVPN as it works reliably in China. It comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it risk-free and get a refund with no questions asked. I don’t condone using a VPN to commit illegal acts, so please understand the local laws and know what’s allowed before connecting in China.

Security Features

Compared to some of the top VPNs I’ve reviewed, Surfshark has many advanced features beyond the standard encryption, IP leak protection, and kill switch.

Encryption — One of the Most Secure in the Industry

Surfshark uses the industry-leading encryption algorithm AES-256 to protect your online data against hackers and online snoops. The military-grade cipher would take billions of years to decrypt with the current supercomputers.

The encryption standard also supports Perfect Forward Secrecy. It generates a unique session key and it’s discarded once the session ends. By doing this, even if an attacker gains access to the encryption keys, they cannot decrypt your past or future VPN sessions so your privacy and security remain intact.

VPN Protocols — Choose Between OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard

Surfshark offers WireGuard and OpenVPN with all its apps. IKEv2 is also offered, but only on iOS and Android. I used the secure OpenVPN protocol for activities like online banking and never had any security breaches. But when I’m more concerned about speed while streaming, I change to WireGuard as it’s much faster and doesn’t sacrifice security.

Kill Switch — Stay Protected at All Times

Surfshark has a kill switch on all its apps, but it’s not turned on by default. A kill switch shuts off your internet if your VPN gets disconnected for whatever reason. This makes sure your data isn’t accidentally leaked to the sites you’re visiting. If you forget to turn it on, you can still switch it on after connecting to a server by clicking the dropdown arrow on the app.

Leak Protection — No DNS, WebRTC, or IPv6 Leaks Found

Although many VPNs have strong encryption, they can accidentally leak your private data to the sites you visit. I tested Surfshark’s built-in leak protection by connecting to random servers in the US, Australia, and Germany.

Screenshot of leak test results with Surfshark connected to a US server

Surfshark has in-built leak protection that always masks your actual IP address

With each server connection, I ran tests on IPLeak.net and I found that my actual IP address was always secure. Surfshark was also highly leak-proof when tested for DNS and WebRTC leaks.

Split Tunneling — Only on Windows and Android Apps

Surfshark’s split tunneling functionality is called a Bypasser and it’s useful to choose specific websites and apps to bypass the VPN connection. On my Windows laptop, I could set certain apps and websites to bypass the secure connection from the ‘Settings’ panel.

CleanWeb Feature Blocks Ads, Malware, and Trackers

Many premium VPNs now offer built-in blockers against ads, malware, and trackers but not all of them work well. However, CleanWeb blocks all pop-up, video, and banner ads on news sites like the Mirror and Forbes. They even loaded faster as a result.

Screenshot of the Daily Mail website with Surfshark's CleanWeb feature blocking all ads

Surfshark’s CleanWeb feature blocked all ads on the Mirror news site

Unfortunately, CleanWeb isn’t effective at blocking all YouTube ads — you may still see some pre-video and mid-roll ads when watching videos.

Extra Security Tools — Lots of Bonus Features

  • Camouflage and NoBorders Modes — use Surfshark in restrictive countries by hiding the fact that you’re using a VPN. Camouflage is automatic when using the OpenVPN protocol, while NoBorders is automatically enabled when Surfshark detects restrictions to your network, so you can access the full web in places like the UAE and Turkey.
  • IP Address Rotation — your IP address is changed every few minutes without dropping your connection to make tracking your activities harder.
  • GPS Override Feature — Surfshark’s location spoofing feature automatically updates your Android device’s location data to match the server location you’re connected to.
  • Invisible to Devices Feature — allows you to become invisible to other devices on your Local Area Network (LAN). It’s only available on Windows and Android devices.
  • Smart DNS — access geoblocked streaming services on devices that don’t support VPNs, such as some smart TVs, gaming consoles, and Apple TVs.
  • Pause VPN Function — Surfshark has a ‘Pause’ option that allows you to disable the connection for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or 2 hours.
  • Dynamic MultiHop — these connections encrypt your data twice for extra security by routing it through 2 servers of your choice instead of 1.
  • 2FA Authentication — this option is available on all apps, where Surfshark asks for extra authentication for your own security.
  • TrustDNS — a standalone app for iOS and Android devices to connect you to a public DNS server instead of a DNS server assigned by your ISP.
  • Surfshark One — this refers to a bundle of services including VPN, a data breach alert system, and a private search engine for an additional fee. It’s available for Android, Windows, and macOS apps.

Privacy

Strict No-Logs Policy

Surfshark’s privacy statement is very clear and easy to understand. It states that your browsing history, IP address, and other identifying data are never tracked, logged, or shared.

Screenshot of Surfshark's privacy policy

Surfshark’s privacy statement is one of the most transparent policies I’ve seen

Besides this, Surfshark uses 100% RAM-only servers so all your data is wiped automatically whenever a server is rebooted as part of regular security procedures.

However, Surfshark collects some data for administrative reasons, including your email address, password (it’s encrypted), and payment details. If you don’t feel comfortable giving this information, register anonymously by signing up with a throwaway email address and paying with cryptocurrency.

Location — Based in the Netherlands

Surfshark was initially headquartered in the British Virgin Islands but has since relocated to the Netherlands. Though it’s a member of the 9 Eyes Alliance, the Netherlands doesn’t have any data retention laws. This means that Surfshark is not obligated to log any data about you, so the no-log policy remains in effect.

Warrant Canary Alerts You to Third-Party Interference

Surfshark’s website features a warrant canary that informs you when the company has received a subpoena by government or law enforcement authorities. While Surfshark stresses that the no-log policy prevents it from saving browsing history, I like knowing whether a security letter, gag order, or government warrant has been issued.

Independent Security Audit on Browser Extensions (Passed)

Like many VPN providers, Surfshark has invested in third-party audits to verify its privacy and security claims.

In 2018, Cure53 conducted an independent audit of Firefox and Chrome browser extensions. The German IT security firm also did an infrastructure audit and security assessment on Surfshark’s servers in 2021. Recently, Deloitte audited Surfshark’s no-log policy and validated the claim. I also read the reports and saw no significant security or privacy flaws.

User Experience

- 8.0 / 10

Simultaneous Device Connections — Use unlimited Devices at Once

One of Surfshark’s standout features is that it protects unlimited devices simultaneously. Most premium VPNs only offer 5 to 10 simultaneous device connections, which isn’t always enough if you own many electronics.

To test this, I connected to a UK server on a Windows laptop, 2 Windows desktops, an iPhone XS, a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, and 3 iPads. I didn’t have any connection issues or significant slowdowns and I only noticed some lag when I connected 12 devices at once. It was impressive because many VPNs slowed down as soon as I added an extra device.

Device Compatibility — Native Apps for Major Operating Systems

I found that Surfshark is a top choice for many devices as it’s easy to use and intuitive. Surfshark has apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux (Ubuntu and Debian), Amazon Fire devices, routers, and more. It’s also easy to use Surfshark to set up a VPN connection with your smart TV and other devices that don’t natively support a VPN, like game consoles.

Ease of Setup & Installation — Effortless Installation

The apps are straightforward to install and use, regardless of your platform. After a quick download and installation, I was using the internet safely in no time. It took about 6 seconds for Surfshark to make a connection whenever I selected a server after restarting my computer. But subsequent connections always took less than 3 seconds.

All the different types of servers for Static IP, MultiHop connections, and Dedicated IP are clearly labeled and easy to switch between. I could also easily create my own MultiHop connection combo and save it as a favorite for next time.

3 Easy Steps to Install Surfshark on Windows:

  1. Sign up for Surfshark. Visit the website, select a subscription plan, and pay. Surfshark offers a 30-day money-back guarantee so it’s risk-free
  2. Download Surfshark. Once you’ve downloaded the app and installed it on your device, log in to your account.

  3. Connect to a server. Select the server and you’re ready to browse, stream, torrent, and play online games securely.
Screenshot of the Surfshark's server and connection interface

Lightweight Browser Extensions for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox

You can install Surfshark’s proxy extensions to Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, which hides your browser traffic and IP address. The extensions also include CleanWeb ad-blocker. However, everything you do outside of the browsers is not secure.

Even though you won’t get VPN-level encryption with the browser extensions, it’s useful when you want to quickly change your IP address. When tested with Netflix US, the browser extensions had no problems playing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Screenshot of Surfshark's browser extension connected to the US while playing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse on Netflix US

You can unblock sites like Netflix with Surfshark’s browser extension

Smart DNS for Smart TVs, Apple TV, Xbox, and PlayStation

Though it doesn’t have native apps for smart TVs, Apple TVs, and gaming consoles, Surfshark offers Smart DNS. Unlike a VPN, Smart DNS doesn’t encrypt your data, but it does change the virtual location of your device.

Support

- 10.0 / 10

I was satisfied with Surfshark’s customer support. You can contact Surfshark over email, an online form, or live chat. The customer support team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, if you prefer troubleshooting problems yourself, you can check out the website’s setup guides, tutorials, and FAQs.

I tested all the options to see how effectively the company resolved issues and found that live chat is the best way to receive fast help and detailed explanations. For most questions, however, I didn’t look much further than Surfshark’s website.

Tested: 24/7 Live Chat

During my review, I tested the 24/7 live chat feature multiple times as I experienced minor technical difficulties. For example, I couldn’t stream Netflix while connected to a US–Detroit server, and I struggled to connect to a specialty P2P server when torrenting. I was impressed by the friendly and fast responses.

Screenshot of Surfshark's 24/7 live chat feature with troubleshooting advice about Netflix US and torrenting

Surfshark’s 24/7 customer support offered helpful tips to resolve my problem

It’s convenient that you can access Surfshark’s live chat directly on the Windows and Android apps. All you have to do is go to ‘Settings’ and then ‘Get Instant Help’ to get one-to-one assistance. Unfortunately, this feature isn’t available yet on iOS or Mac.

Tested: Email Support

I also tested Surfshark’s email support by asking about some of its features. For comparison, I also used an email address not connected to my Surfshark account to see if there would be a difference in response time. Fortunately, there wasn’t and I received detailed responses in less than an hour every time.

Though the response times were fast, I recommend contacting Surfshark over 24/7 live chat. It’s much quicker as you can speak to a customer support representative directly, especially when you’re facing an urgent technical issue.

Online FAQs and Troubleshooting Guides

Many VPNs have websites with help sections that are poorly organized that they’re barely usable. Surfshark’s “Help” section on its website is comprehensive and regularly updated. Most of the time, I didn’t need to contact customer service as I could find answers to my questions.

Topics are divided into 4 sections: installation, troubleshooting, account, and general inquiries. You can find step-by-step instructions for installation and troubleshooting, complete with screenshots and even some video tutorials.

How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care

We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.

Pricing

- 10.0 / 10

Surfshark is a very affordable VPN, considering what you get for the price. Depending on your needs, Surfshark subscriptions are available for 1 month, 1 year, and 2 years. The longer you subscribe to the service, the bigger the discount you’ll receive. The 2-year + 2 months subscription offers the maximum savings at just $2.29/month.

Wide Range of Payment Options (Including Bitcoin)

You can pay with credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover), cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple), Amazon Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and Sofort. If you want to use Surfshark anonymously, sign up with a throwaway email address and pay with cryptocurrency.

Note: Surfshark doesn’t accept payments through QIWI, so if you’re in Russia, you can still use crypto to pay with a layer of anonymity.

30-Day Money-Back Guarantee

If you’re unsure if Surfshark is suitable for you, try it with its 30-day money-back guarantee available to new subscribers. If you don’t like Surfshark at the end of this period, simply request a refund via 24/7 live chat or send an email to the customer support team. It also offers a 7-day free trial, but it’s only available on Android, macOS, and iOS devices.

I got a full refund from Surfshark when I tested the money-back guarantee

Since Surfshark is one of the best monthly VPNs, I tested the money-back guarantee by signing up for the 1-month plan. I requested a full refund via live chat before the 30-day period ended and I got my money back in 7 days. The agent didn’t even ask for a reason for canceling.

Final Verdict

Consider Surfshark if you are looking for a high-quality VPN that can access global content privately, securely, and at high speed. It’s a very affordable option with easy-to-use apps for all major devices. Surfshark even includes CleanWeb, an ad and malware blocker that’s very handy when browsing certain ad-heavy sites.

One disadvantage to using Surfshark is that some of its advanced features are only available on specific apps, but I’d still confidently use it for my day-to-day online activities. However, if you travel to China often and need a VPN that works there, there are better options than Surfshark.

You can try Surfshark yourself for free for 7 days or for 30 days on any compatible device with its money-back guarantee. That way, you can test every feature for yourself and if you don’t like it, easily ask for a refund over 24/7 live chat.

FAQs About Surfshark

Is Surfshark good?

Yes, it’s one of the top VPNs in 2024. Surfshark will give you consistently fast speeds and do so without compromising your security or logging your activities. Besides the standard IP leak protection and kill switch, Surfshark also offers several advanced features like IP rotation and Dynamic MultiHop connections for extra protection.

Can I use Surfshark for free?

Yes, you don’t have to pay when you sign-up for Surfshark’s 7-day free trial. You can download the app from Apple App or Google Play Store. You can also get free months by referring others to Surfshark. Alternatively, try Surfshark risk-free for 30 days with its money-back guarantee.

As a general rule, I don’t recommend using a free VPN. Though there are some safe and free VPNs, you’ll have to make some sacrifices in terms of bandwidth, server locations, pop-up ads, or slow speeds. The worst are shady VPNs that secretly sell your browsing history, private data, and bandwidth to make money.

Is Surfshark really safe?

Yes, it’s safe to use Surfshark. When you connect to its server, Surfshark protects your data with military-grade 256-bit encryption. This is the strongest level of encryption available and it’s uncrackable. All the apps I downloaded were also clean and didn’t contain malware. The no-log policy is verified by independent third-party firms so your information is completely private.

Does Surfshark work with streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video?

Yes, during tests, Surfshark unblocked all major streaming platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and many other popular services. Besides the popular Netflix US, Surfshark also accessed libraries in countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and more. All in all, Surfshark can connect to over 28 streaming services around the world.

Can I use multiple devices with Surfshark?

Yes, Surfshark is one of the few VPNs that allow unlimited connections. I can leave as many devices as I want to be connected to the VPN at all times. With many other VPNs, I get logged out when I exceed the device limit and then go online without protection when I forget to reconnect. With Surfshark, my security is constantly maintained for my peace of mind.
